Directions Regarding Display of “Date of Manufacturing” and “Best Before Date” in case of Sweets

In suppression of the previous order dated 24.02.2020 issued on the subject, in public interest and to ensure food safety, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has decided that in case of non-packaged/ loose sweets, the container/tray containing the sweets at the outlet for sale should display the “Best Before Date” mandatorily. The directions come into effect from 1 October, 2020.

Where the display of “Best Before Date” has been made mandatory, Food Business Operators (“FBOs”) may also choose to display along with that, the “Date of Manufacturing”.

This is voluntary and non-binding. The “Best Before Date” may be decided as per the nature of products and the local conditions prevailing.

Along with that, an indicative list of shelf life of various types of sweets is also given in the Guidance Note on Safety of Traditional Milk Products on the FSSAI website which can be referred to by the FBOs.
